DEKRA | Hochschule für Medien is a private university of applied sciences in the trendy Berlin Friedrichshain district. The course on television and film for international students focuses on the numerous required steps in the production process. There you will learn everything from the idea to the final featured story.
The main topics of the basic course on television and film are film history, film analysis, screenplay, film and video technology and sound engineering. In addition to the theoretical foundations, the methods and techniques of film-making and television production will be discussed. The typical day-to-day lectures will be mainly communication and project-oriented. Students will acquire comprehensive practical experience as well as basic scientific and technical knowledge.
After the basic course, students can choose one of the available specializations: directing, camera, production, postproduction or audio. Under the guidance of the lecturers, they will write, shoot, film, cut and produce their first short films, documentaries, music videos and similar film and television contributions. The course will end off with a subject-specific Bachelor thesis.

The specialization, camera, focuses on the intensive examination of and possibilities with analogue and digital cameras. The conceptual, artistic and technical competencies necessary for image acquisition are studied. Assignments in various documentary and fictional formats are done in close cooperation with the directing and production students.

Students learn every step involved in a television or film production – from planning to implementation. Some examples: The professional calculation of production budgets and the financing of audio-visual projects, control tasks, (copyright) legal frameworks, organizational know-how and much more. Job areas can include production management, recording management, (creative) production or independent television and film production.

Students of this specialization deal with both the technical and dramaturgic issues of classical film montage. The use of various editing techniques, as well as the organization and management of digital data are some topics you will learn in postproduction. They get an insight into the techniques of digital imaging and processing, with the aim of producing visual special effects. Furthermore the students will create their own picture worlds, image layers or backgrounds – for example for green-screen shots or animated films. Relevant professions include cutters, digital image technicians (DIT), colour graders, motion graphic designers, digital artists and animation artists.

The professional recording and processing of sounds and noises are a central focus of this field of study. Students will become competent in applying various forms of acoustics and sound. While deepening knowledge through practice-oriented study, the work of different professionals in the audio sector will also be explored. Professionals in the audio sector can be sound mixers, sound designers and film mixers.
