Our Bachelor program Film and Performing Arts combines film acting and directing in one study program. It focuses of the development of an individual media personality as we live in a time in which images and pictures are more influential than ever.
As first higher education institution in Germany and Europe DEKRA | Hochschule für Medien connects the education of performing in front of the camera with the knowledge for working behind the camera. Film acting and directing are no longer understood as two separate areas but as one unit. Foundation for the two specializations Film Acting and Film Education/Media Pedagogic is a large-scaled artistic and academic teaching, in which learning and work-related training alternates. So your study program becomes a holistic experience and prepares you in the best possible way for a successful career.
The basics of the Film and Performing Arts program
The foundation course Film and Performing Arts includes among the first experiences in film acting also the basics for interpretation and arrangement. Artistic basic courses in film composition, body movement, music and vocal coaching are combined with courses around camera guidance and light technology. During the third semester you can choose between the specialization programs Acting and Directing or Film Education/Media Pedagogic. You deepen your film theoretical knowledge and artistic possibilities of expression and practice your new skills during many practical projects under the supervision of experienced teachers. The program ends with a practical module and a discipline-specific bachelor thesis.
The study program Film and Performing Arts is oriented towards practical courses and project work. It focuses on developments in the film and television industry. In this program you are going to work with our cooperation partners from the areas of art, industry and science as well as with students from our study program Film and TV. Moreover, we offer many practical courses like our workshop format Filmwerkstatt or excursions and trips through the creative sector and filmmaking business in Berlin. This helps to build up your own network of professionals.

The specialisation programs Film Acting and Directing and Film Education / Media Pedagogic
In the specialisation programs Film Acting and Directing the focus lies on media specific acting and staging. In different modules you experience, test and reflect the process of development of a cinematic idea to the actual performance in front of the camera.
During the specialisation program Film Education/Media Pedagogic the critical reception and acquisition of films and moving images is taught. Moreover, you learn about the aspects of film education and approach themes like film didactics, media pedagogic, music theory and practice as well as aspects of youth and child protection and film and cinematic education.
Concerning the implementation of your individual cinematic work we provide a creative and professional work environment with cameras, microphones a green box and a recording studio during the whole time of your bachelor program. Studying at DEKRA | Hochschule für Medien means to practice, test and learn while working independently. Our teachers of all of our study programs are ready to support you any time.
The practical module: Vital artistic practice and professional networking
The practical module takes place right before your bachelor’s thesis and replaces the traditional internship. Depending on your specialization program you can gain practical experience by working at a film set, teacher or education facility. In contrast, you have the chance to realize your own project. For example shooting a movie or working on your personal music or video project. In any case, this 12-week period of your bachelor’s program is provided for individual use and should help to build up your own network of professionals in media and film business. Film and Performing Arts program – Degree Bachelor of Arts
After six semesters you earn your degree Bachelor of Arts. This degree is accredited for all study programs at DEKRA | Hochschule für Medien. You get a comprehensive theoretical and practical training in acting and directing as well as an accredited Bachelor degree, that is approved in Germany and abroad. If you plan on going into further education after your bachelor, you will find many universities offering fitting master’s programs in the field of acting, directing or filmmaking.
Professional fields to join with the study program Film and Performing Arts
After your degree in Film and Performing Arts you have various different career options, depending on the choice of your specialization program. With the specialization program Film Acting and Directing you can work as director for TV or cinema, actor, TV speaker, dubbing actor, video artist, casting director, acting or vocal coach, producer, speaker for association support, creative director in advertising and TV or script editor.
With the specialization program Film Education/Media Pedagogic you can work as film critic or consultant and manager for film festivals, as film and motion picture assessment or in the areas of child and youth protection. Also, a career as self-employed media and film educator for primary and secondary schools, universities or in higher education can be provided. Media consultant or technical editor for film or TV are also suitable careers for you.
