On Sep. 9th 2019, a group of students who are studying Journalism and PR at DEKRA | Hochschule für Medien visited the Ideenlabor der BSR at EUREF Campus in Berlin Schöneberg. The field trip was organised by Dr. Petyo Budakov and Prof. Dr. Michael Beuthner (Course Journalism and PR) in order to support the students throughout the completion of the project they have been working on: “Smart City Berlin”.
What makes the city smart? Smart home, smart medicine, smart urban living, or shared economy lifestyle?
The Smart City approach aims to find solutions to the ecological, social, economic and cultural challenges faced by Berlin through the use of intelligent technology. By being aware that Berlin wishes to preserve – and as far as possible enhance – its appeal and its quality of life, the students have to create a photo story which consists of six frames and reflects their awareness toward the Smart City Berlin. A variety of topics have been considered, such as: smart clothing, smart home, smart medicine (improving healthcare and preventing stigma), smart urban living, or shared economy lifestyle.
However, in order to enable the students to widen their scientific horizons in terms of the project, Prof. Beuthner and Dr. Budakov initiated this field trip, kindly hosted by the “Ideenlabor der BSR”. This lab currently consists of 16 team members from all BSR business units. The cooperation is based on a voluntary basis. Their most important goal is to continuously promote a culture of innovation as well as giving a new impulse to the BSR smart development.
For this purpose, they started a cooperation with a large number of universities and start-ups in order to conceive new and relevant concepts. “Ideenlabor der BSR” is a laboratory of ideas which tries to give its meaningful contribution to the society by promoting a truly innovative culture of innovation. They also give support in terms of assuring a sustainable business success. Their efforts were awarded with the Innovation Prize of the Association of Municipal Enterprises (VKU).
Moreover, in 2016, Ideenlabor launched the InfraLab Berlin together with six other infrastructure companies on the EUREF campus in Berlin-Schöneberg. The main goal is to join their efforts in order to develop smart solutions for the innovative city of the future. As an idea laboratory of the BSR, they are intensively involved in a variety of initiatives, such as the interactive format "The Ideas Lab Invites", which regularly enables start-ups, creative freelancers or institutions to present their ideas, activities or business models.
A presentation was delivered by Mr. Frieder Söling, who is associated to the Management Board of Energy, Environment and Innovations. The students became aware of the latest InfraLab Berlin initiatives, goals, values and mission. They also were introduced with the latest smart technologies that have been used or those which are going to be launched quite soon. After the presentation, a discussion was sparked and moderated by Prof. Dr. Michael Beuthner which helped the participants to discover new smart living insights as well as rethinking their current creative approach.
